Devs policy about new weapons is exactly like with new locations : "We'll improve those already in-game before implementing new ones". I don't know about the Auto-Axe idea, if it is good or not, and I tend to say it is (Melee skill) but all in all Big Rifles sprite does not fit it.
But as I said no new weapons will be implemented before at least 3D era.
