Question about merchant timer
« on: June 13, 2010, 10:49:55 am »

I saw while searching that barter raises the merchant timer, so ok, there's a way to do it.  What I couldn't find an answer to was this:  What's the logic behind this decision?  I suppose if you don't want people to crank barter and wreck the economy, then you don't want it to change prices, but this seems like an incredibly weird use for the skill.

hi,

barter does change prices , the system is as follows...:

all merchants have a specific type of goods that they buy and sell for full price [ weapon and ammo merchant, like buster in NCR or gunrunners for example, armor merchants...]; but they will buy other type of goods for a better price depending on your barter skill, so you can sell or trade anything to anyone.

hope that's clear enough!

I didn't know that, so I appreciate that, but it makes me that much more curious about the logic behind the timer.

I noticed after I posted this thread that occasionally an NPC would give the message that s/he is talking to too many people at once; if there's a limit to the number of people who can talk to somebody, then I get why the timer exists.  But 30 seconds is so short- even if I know what I want, where it is in the list, and how much it will cost, it's very easy to run out of time as I'm counting out my caps, and almost impossible to trade other items in as well.

On a personal note, last night that led to the barter screen no longer coming up; after I relogged, all my money was gone, and there had been nobody around while I was dealing with the merchant to steal from me.  So, even though I'm new, and even though I realize barter can raise the timer, it seems like a bump to a base of 45 seconds would be fair and allow people to level critical skills while still being able to reasonably trade, and not have to blow a few on barter in order to buy stuff with all their shit-cleaning, box-hauling caps.

I know this is going to sound really dumb but...

If your counting your caps if you type in the number on the numerical keypad it makes it ALOT faster....

I didn't know this till I was level 19....

How could you not know that?  You've always been able to do this, definitely in Fallout 2 (and its been awhile, so if i remember right) and also in Fallout 1.

It was even possible in FO1, only that there 999 caps where the maximum at once.
