I'm not arguing about the logic here, it's just that before the patch merc prices were around 3000 per head. It seems strange that the sudden increase to 8000 would be a mere coincidence or a spike in mercenary interest. It appears that something has happened after the patch and I was wondering if I was the only one experiencing the inflation.

nah its only that spike you are talking about, i found dog for 50 caps and ghoul with spear for 100 caps, when i bought some of them their prices became over 1000 ^^ so you dont need to buy ton of mercs to raise their price by good amount ^^

Prices should reflect the value of the merc not whether someone bought it recently. There aren't that many options to begin with and many higher tier mercs suck. Like yeah she can use BG but she wears a leather jacket and dies really easily, totally not worth the caps.

If someone see the mercs at a price they are willing to pay they will buy them. This process continues until the price ceases to be worth it at which point the price falls back down into the acceptable region again.

The prices don't reflect if someone bought it recently as such, they reflect a general region where the collective "players" consider the mercs to be worth the money.

militia in towns has 274 hp, metal armor and miniguns and they still suck, dont expect npcs to be as good as players. And changing economy shows real value of the merc and its very good feature in my opinion.

It's additionally worth noting that this price is valid globally, per merc type. For example, the cheapest melee merc will cost the same in NCR as in Redding.

According to the changelog it seems that they have fixed the issue. I have yet to try it out.
