Am i too dumb to craft stuff?

Hello everyone :)

I read all the stuff i get, and somehow managed to survive till lv4. Now i want(ed) to try the crafting system, and...well...i cant get it to work.
Stuff like the "Primitive tool" - no problem. "Knuckles" - no problem.

BUT. If i need to use a workbench, it simply stops working. Whatever i try. First, i tried metal parts - 2 iron ore, check. Standing near a workbench, check.
And thats what i get: "You fail to create the item" - why? I dont get it. Yes, i doublechecked the workbenches - used the one in Hub and in NCR. Nothing helps.

Enlighten me please :)

Click on a workbench to use it, standing near one isn't enough

If you already used the workbench and it said you failed, it means that you don't have enough skill to make the item. For instance, you need 40% in science skill to craft some metal parts.
