Ok, as a new player...
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:06:51 pm »

I'm sure these have probably been mentioned before, but a couple of suggestions that would help to fix the learning curve:

Respawn in or near NCR, or it's karma appropriate alternative if you're being bad. After you build a tent, respawn at your tent.

Be able to rent a safety deposit box at a bank which has a small carry weight. Like say enough to hold a leather armor, an smg, and some bullets.

I don't mind dying a lot... Hell, I don't even mind loosing ALL of my stuff after 4 hours of play and 9 brahmin hides in my inventory because the game lagged out during a battle. I do however mind when every time I die (which is often I'm trying to cross the entire map after all), I get respawned as far away as can be from NCR. One of the few decently safe spot in the game. What's the point? To eat up time?

Its to stop people from respawning, going to their tent and rearming and rejoining the same fight as if they hadn't died.

For a safety deposit box, try a hotel room. they're not perfect, but they can do a job until you've got a tent

Thanks for the tip!

I would suggest making the respawn timer longer in that case, perhaps make the length level dependent? I understand the reasoning, but a maxed out character with a ton of outdoorsman is going to be getting to his tent quickly anyhow. A newb is going to be spending an hour, and not a fun hour and gaining xp either. Loosing all your stuff after hours of play may not inspire a rage-quit, but the hour trying to get back to where you can 'start' to rebuild certainly will.

ISAred --> Firstly, there is nothing like 'maxed out char' in this game. Secondly, combat chars (those for whom this was made) are rarely good in traveling.

Random drop pisses me off too from time to time, but it is not that bad when you'll learn how to not get killed too often

Sorry, I mean a max level character.

And yea, after level 5 and a bit of game experience it's no biggie. My problem is that as a person who is new (twice now, just when I got the hang of everything WIPE haha go find your junk elsewhere sucker!), it seems like an hour respawn time when you factor in the traveling. Why not penalize the dudes running around with AP rockets and shit? 10 minute respawn at level 21, but you're at your tent. 30 seconds if you're level 1. etc...

I realize, the wasteland is BRUTAL! It is still however a place where you magically get reincarnated, so why not make it a bit less frustrating for people who are not in the know, and a bit more frustrating for people who are old hands? It's not going to make it easier for experienced people to level up, since they know how to squeeze every bit of XP out of the game anyhow. It might even make it harder to level up later on because despite your gang having crap-tons of equipment, you may not want to risk the long ass wait if you get killed... though I guess the gathering cooldowns have kinda made people accustom to waiting haha.

Anyhow, just my 2 cents.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, stranger.

The 7 minute CD on healing yourself already stops people from coming right back.

I don't agree on that. I am still playing, didn't rage quitted yet. Used FA and doctor a few times, without spending a single point on it. First time I was travelling alone, now we are two and if I fail in doctor, the other is using doctor on me, etc... I am level 4 now, he is 6 and we both do very well.

Imagine, I started my char today and I am at level 4. I can produce my own bullets and basic gear, without beeing a real crafter.

I'm level 4 and things are going pretty well for me too.

However, I can see things tailing off around level 6 or so. There's not a lot of quests for people once they're past the first few levels, then it'll just become grind central - through killing mobs or crafting.

It's fun for now, but I can see myself getting bored.

As far as high level characters, I think that town control has tons of potential. Has anybody here ever played tribes? Non-permanent attack/defensive structures than can be purchased and dropped from inventory would be my idea of a good time :D Auto-Turrets, barriers that can be destroyed with c4, enclave drop-ships. The potential for mayhem is endless.

Okay, I don't know you or anything, but over your name it says "developer".

So I'd imagine that you have some involvement with the "development" of the game itself... So why aren't you more familiar with the game? Why are you comparing yourself to others that have NO idea what they're doing, as starters (such as myself)?

I'm just confused. I don't mean to sound so harsh, but at the same time, I feel like you should have more insight with the whole "developer" with your name...

I am not comparing myself with starters. It's not that I use some secret knowledge to solve stuff... Everything I (we) have done so far is known by other players as well.

This game can be really hard for starters. I've also had my trouble first as you can see in my rant thread :D
But you just really have to find a good way to make money. That way you can just buy those "10 brahmin hides" like I did.
And I'm not talking about shit shoveling or carrying boxes to make caps. Fruits are the real deal. Just find a place with 2 or more fruit plants and collect them until you have like 30 (they're regrowing). Make your way back to a city without getting killed and be happy.
