are books needed for crafting

this link says books are no longer needed for crafting is this true? http://fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/Books
Because i just got the guns and bullets magazine for crafting guns as a bonus for purchase of gunsmith skill

No, they were needed before though

Books are memento from previously used system, now they have sentimental value only.
