New method to obtain items: salvaging
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:17:57 pm »

We have cool locations like waterworks, glow, mariposa, golgotha and whatever unsafe location with containers.

I suggest that all the containers in those location have a chance to contain items of wide variety. Instead of being normal containers they will work like this:

When a character opens them, there's a chance that an item spawn in the container.
They don't spawn there on their own, only when someone opens the container. Could have a special rule that if someone opens a container once, there's certain chance to get items but not right after to prevent the spamming of single container. Instead, a container further away will have increased chance to have loot for this character only. This would encourage players to run around the location, opening containers all around.

Could also have a special rule that the longer a char spends inside the location and opening containers, there's a high chance for him to find something truly valuable. This time could be for example 5 minutes and 20 lockers, after which there's a chance that next locker has something very good.

Certain locations could dedicate towards specific items. For example sierra could spawn medicals, mariposa could spawn guns and armor.

The outcome would be that player could spend all his day running around in this unsafe zone, salvaging lockers.

To encourage players to carry items with them, following items could increase their chance to find stuff:
- crowbar
- tool
- shovel (for graves only)
- geiger counter (doesn't make any sense but so what)
- super tool kit
- wrench
- lockpicks
- all knives
- flare
- sledgehammer

I like it a lot! Will probably be sneaker heaven in those places, but still. Nice idea.

Isn't this one is included in the Random items in containers thread?
Although that one is for low tier items but as I read it would work with all containers.

Well I would prefer the items spawning in containers on random encounter maps more, simply because there are too many pk camps as it is, and as the population grows (say from a great update) they will only get worse.  Still some other form of obtaining items would be great, it gets real old getting barely working low quality weapons and gear from npcs.

But thats the idea behind having these containers in unsafe locations - competition.

Avv, your idea is neat, but imo it needs better clarification - some formulas perhaps ?

Now that I think of it, instead of time the bonus for finding more items could be related to a following rule: The game tracks the player's presence inside a location. When player enters, a random container will be chosen to be his "checkpoint". He can't know which one it is but if he keeps opening the lockers, he will eventually reach the checkpoint container. Every time such container is opened, his chances to find an item in a locker is increased by 5%. Every time he opens a container a new checkpoint container is randomly selected. After 100% a special checkpoint container is chosen and it will do the following:

a) spawns a nice amount of items or an expensive single item when opened by this specific player
b) it resets the item finding chance
c) it gives a special message saying "You feel lucky"

If player leaves the map, his chance to find items gets reset.

So is it possible to find 20 full containers till you manage to get to your final special one (when youre extremely lucky) [or vice-versa, getting just the final loot?] ?
What if you get killed during the process ? You start all over again when you come back ?

Good suggestion, it will add interest at wandering in town and being careful for it, add some competition as said... +1

Yes for first part, correct if wrong, but he said that you got to open each "chekpoints" and at a moment it ends, not that there is a "final loot" container since the start. Right ?

And :

What if you get killed during the process ? You start all over again when you come back ?

If player leaves the map, his chance to find items gets reset.

Every locker has a chance to spawn stuff in it when a player opens them + the stuff that's already there. Rich players probably won't bother with some junk and metal parts once they spawn and just leave it there but a nuub might be interested.

Making it dependent on every player might be exploited with alts
