Safety suitcase (support of PvP trading)
« on: July 21, 2012, 03:10:55 pm »

Idea is simple, implement safety prewar suitcases into the game to support player vs. player trades (=non combat player interaction).

How: Safety suitcases are prewar relicts that could be founded in encounters. They are filled with various random useful or useless stuff (ammo, medicaments, weapons, tiny chace to get realy rare weapon). When you found one, you can use your lockpick skill to open it. If you are successfull, you will get random item. If you are unsuccessful, you will recieve this message: "Even your lockpick skill is high, you dont know how to safely open suitcase. You suspect that inside is an explosive that would destroy content or even kill you. It would be better to let someone else open this suitcase."

The point is, that every character would have only one chance to open it. The high lockpick skill should not be needed, in fact, lockpick skill should be eliminated in roll. If you fail, you have to aks/trade/sell/give to other player, until some player (char) would open it. The only requirement is, that character have to be at least at lvl 10 or maybe more, to avoid suitcase metagaming.

Chance to successfuly open the suitcase could be fixed: 1:100, 1:250 ... so even numerous gangs, after they tried all their chars, would need help of other players. I can imagine, that after whole (or majority) of faction temates tries to open it, they would need to interact with non faction player. Sell it or exchange it for another safety suitcases.

And finaly. This should not be lockpickers chars feature, this should improve trade relation among factions/players that have (almost) everything and dont need to trade outside their faction.

Help of other players eh? I've got 4 lockpickers and if that don't do it, more can be made.

AVV, imagine situation, that your faction or you find 20 suitcases. Except one, you cannot open them (as i said, no lockpick roll, only one try to open/disarm it). Then you have 19 suitcases that have potential to have i.e. gauss pistol, needler, non craftable ammo, .... . What you would do? Put it on the ground in front of tent or go to NCR bazaar and try to exchange them for different suitcases (that your chars did not tried to open, so you have chance to find inside something). The motivation is simple: there could be real "treasure" inside, and the main effect is, that even wealthy players would be forced to meet and trade with other players at public locations.. Like in early days after wipe.

Hey, what about a machine in an unsafe place where you can try again to open the suitcase (with a long cooldown to force teams to stay inside during process).
All potential PvP places are welcome  :P

I would make as many alts as needed to to open this suitcase. Some of my pals would probably do the same and we would end up with about 15 lockpickers or more to try the suitcases.

OK, math. Imagine, that there is chance 250:1, or even 1000:1. What would be better? Make 250 or 1000 lvl 10 (or more) alts or take your 19 briefcase, visit NCR, exchange them with another players for another 19 suitcases and try to open new suitcases. And of course, the content of every suitcase would be randomly generated at the moment of successful opening.

What a waste of time, it's better to just do a trade, more fun too.

Pretty cool suggestion.

Sell it or exchange it for another safety suitcases.

I have a few doubts.

1. Two lockpicker alts instead of one and your chance to get rare items increase by 50%. Like we need more alts.

2. I'm a bit skeptical that many people would buy a thing without knowing what is inside and with something like 1:250 chance to be able to even open it. If it was to encourage trading this doesn't seem like best way. More like encourage gambling. The only good reason seems to be rare items, but then it's really tiny chance 1:250 * chance to get rare.... also see 1.

3. Trading. If you traded a suitcase yourself, you don't know if you can open the suitcase or if you tried to open it in the past when you see someone trading one. You would have to meet with the person only to check it. For seller that means risking suitcase, possibly for nothing (wasting time), each time someone wants to buy it. I don't think this could work in practice. You would be limited to people you trust, or more likely just your gang storing all suitcases in one place, which seems to me counter productive if you want to encourage trading.

Well this sounds like a nice idea, i like the idea of not needing lockpicking and just having a chance of opening on a character.

If the chance was that low, I wouldn't even bother with the cases.

in real life lottery, there is a even smaller chance to win, but people still pay for lottery tickets.

1. no lockpick skill needed and process of s.suitcase opening should not be related to lockpick skill. Again, it is not "minigame" for lockpicker chars, it should support player vs. player barter, trades. If players would be motivated to trade s.suitcase among others, they will trade more regular stuff too, because they coulduse this suitcase trade opportunity to buy/sell their storages.

2. rare items.. gauss pistol, Bozar (even long rifles can be dismantled in object of size of suitcase).

3.I understand it. But in PvP trade, you have to use your social skills, not only "passive char atributes". I agree that you have chance to rebuy your used suitcase, but chance would be minimal and it is part of the game. Chance for clever traders :) fail for greenhorns.

Maybe later, i would like to see players at different places, not only at warzones.

How exactly would this encourage players to do more trades with regular stuff?  Only an idiot would be willing to trade items of real value for a minor chance to get rare items, especially if that suitcase may end up with just a 10mm pistol in it?

I could see this being of value if players could put their own items into a suitcase with a number lock.  The suitcase would need to say what it has in it when you examine it (unrealistic but needed)  and would allow people to trade in relative safety with each other with them radioing/using IRC/PM on forum the code after they are safe.  (Yes you could still be trolled by a person and killed after giving them your case but you would enjoy the satisfaction of knowing they would not get the item/caps in said briefcase.)
