I just found out about this and it sounds like the best idea I have ever heard, but I don't know how to get started. I downloaded it off of ModDB and installed, but I cannot seem to connect to the updater. Any help would be appreciated

One way to get help anytime is through the game's IRC channel. Check the wiki for that info. If you use Firefox, you can get the Chatzilla plugin. The web-based ones don't work so well. Once you're into the forestnet.org IRC server, /join #2238 (and/or #2238help) for help.

Moddb probably has some old version. Delete it and get the latest version of the client from:
http://fodev.net/forum/index.php/topic,22146.0.html

its because your trying to connect to the old server and host go on the foconfig and there should be a option to click net click that, the host is 176.9.105.171 and the port is 2238, update that to get the faction zip file ect from the update and then you click the f02238config you click the master dat. choose where the master dat file is and the same for critter dat. its because your trying to update from the old server host i had the same problem the oter day when i tryed installing it to my other laptop hopefully ive been able to help if not pm me and explain the problems and ill try again, and when u start ill try to help u in game also with weapons and shit as its hard to sttart
