Weapon Serial Number
Serbian:
Even the idea of crafted weapons having serial numbers is complete bullshit, but then again this is Fallout, where 16-year old cult followers use 200 year old miniguns to wipe out armies of infertile grandpa mutants :)
-I agree with you Spotty, and just as i mentioned in my post, weapons with lower serial numbers would add some flavor, as well as "special edition" ones, where they could either have some special text written on them, or if the devs are not feeling lazy, proper "special" skins (golden desert eagles...)
Also, i believe the ideal solution for crafted weapons should be expanding the text limit on what you can write on your gun to 16 letters and four numbers (to of course, limit serial scamming), so that once you kill some random maggot in the wasteland and decide to read the description of his weapon, you would get this, beside the acctual description of the weapon : Unfortunately, the serial number of this weapon has been scratched out. There is some text etched into the weapon, it reads "AK-112, Guncraft Union, 5k"
From that, you could suspect that the weapon is an AK-112, made by the GC Union clan, and that it's base price is 5k.
-On a side note, i have a lot of OOOOOLD ideas, the serial thing being one of them, and even though it's not so Fallout-ish, more advanced weapons could have RFID chips, though the lightmotive of Fallout is that we never acctualy gone any further from vacuum tubes and that the future is more like a rerun of the 1950's. The chip could only be read from terminals, but would hold far more data than normal serials. Plus, it couldn't be scratched out.
maciek83:
ok but WHY?
you failed to tell what is a purpose of this suggestion?
Serbian:
I acctualy did mention the purpose multiple times, but due to the messiness of my text, it may not be so obvious.
The purpose is simple. Weapons need to be recognized, remembered. When they are all the same with just a small difference in condition, that's impossible. But when you add something as simple as a serial number system, they all get faces. They become unique.
LagMaster:
when do guns need IDs?
is not like in RL where we need ID for our guns so they can't be stolen

Its for added flavor.
- collect the lowest serials
- try to be the first to craft a weapon of its kind
- name your bazooka Fat Bertha and when you shoot a rocket you yell "Enjoy Fat Berthas kisses mofo!"
It wouldnt have any real impact on gameplay (people might spend caps to get lowest serials).
If you didnt want to bother with it, you wouldnt even know its there.
Its all about flavor.
EDIT; phone erased half my post.
