In an earlier era there was a gate. Thieving members of VC used to steal from people opening the door. There was only 1 hex you could open the door from, so it was easy for thieves to steal there.

And even with the gate and guards telling players not to touch it there was still deaths of eager explorers.

Who Killed Bambi:
even with gates they shoot if you opening gates without citizenship /day pass at day/ simply shoot at night non-citizens
