That sounds right. I actually just did this with a big guns guy and had no problems at all other than a lot of misfires since there were no big guns down there. But he has EN 10, level 23 with Rad Resist and Snakeater. Easy! Hello flares, daisies, and paramedics bag!

Who Killed Bambi:
entrance to subway is right at sf respawn point, just ask guy in green t shirt for quest. you ll have personalized location with some good items and some cash.

Easiest way to get bottlecaps (If trader have caps at the moment)
Is that "Guns" shopkeeper at HUB.

Get lot of fruits (500 fruits is like 4k to 6k caps, and fruits are even too easy to get)
Also sell fibers, if you found them at encounters with fruits.
