Items disappearing

I'm brand new to this game and my items seem to have disappeared. I lost a pipe rifle and a few 10mm rounds that were gifted to me after being killed by some raiders. Later on I started shoveling shit down at Broken Hills. I wanted to take a break so I exited- but I'm not sure if i hit the 'Esc' key or exited by menu. When I booted up the game again my shovel, flint and 77 earned caps were gone (but I am pretty sure I did not lose exp). My question is that when I hit the 'Esc' key to exit the game does it not save progress? Or was it just an uncontrollable glitch?

So you logged out of the game, right?

Q1:  Where did you log out?  In town?  World Map?  Tent?

Q2:  Were you still in the same location when you logged back in?

When you log out your character is still in-game for some time and anyone can steal from you. You should log out outside of towns

Okay a proper answer-in this game,when you die you loose everything in your inventory(even in hand item) Thats why players use tents-as a storage for items so they dont loose so much when they die

Alright, thanks. I was in a town and got robbed because of it. (at least, thats my conclusion)
I learned the hard way.
