Combat is not realistic
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:34:33 pm »

Combat can be super hard against robbers and raiders, but its not their gear or their skills, its because they suicide. No matter how hurt they are they always attack full force. There could be 1 NPC enemy and it will suicide on a player. I could see animals doing this maybe, but not humans. Its obsurd and ridiculous. NPC's ran away when hurt in Fallout 2.

Matter of opinion.

The way I see it hit points in game doesn't reflect character's real health. It's more like measurement of an "ability to withstand hazardous incidents". Because it isn't realistic either that you can be bursted in face and you're still standing. So when you're at 1hp you're not actually mortally injured but only full of bruises and small cuts. Once hps go below zero, that's when you really are hit. If you see things like that, the combat starts to make more sense.

Its a video game it isn't suppose to be realistic. I mean that's why we like these video game thingies so much can't really dress up in combat armor and run around and shoot a bunch of things with a giant mini gun in real life so we do it in video games. I never understand the people's need for realism in video games... reality sucks.

Indeed the AI is non existant in the game.

The worst is NPCs attacking you in northern towns while you TC in ba with a minigun, complete populations will use you for suicide assistance. You will then be accused of killing the game while you only remove the *broken* annoying NPCs.

Best would be for NPCs to run world map in certains conditions.

Of course it's unrealistic.  If it WAS realistic, no one would play (including me).

If you want realism, we could try perma-death.  You die, you make a new character.  You cannot instantly heal crippled limbs, it would take several months (if you could survive long enough).  Same with First Aid skill.  Eyeshots are instant death or severe disability, and most shots (be it body or limbs, regardless of armor worn) do severe damage.  You are unable to carry more than 120 lbs/55kg, and it's impossible to run with rattle that weighs that much, and you are highly likely to develop severe injuries rucking that around for prolonged periods of time.  Need I go on?

That doesn't sound like much fun does it?

The one thing that I never considered being unrealistic is an NPC encounter in the waste killing you utilizing violence of action.

The encounters aren't very much fun is all I'm saying. More aggravating than fun.

You could try winning the fight.  It's not as aggravating then.

Dont take the piss with such an argument, the OP raises a legitimate point. There is no AI and all they know how to do is blitzkrieg you with no calculation to their survival. It was only a poor choice of wording with "realism"

How about this one: the raiders are on drugs and are attacking everything they see? They even nuke their own mates with 'nades.

Yet, i saw some rats fleeing from me to the grid, is there some fear system implemented, devs?

Yes, it's mostly based on chance to hit I think.
Go hunt farmers with 90 AC character and you will see some funny behavior.

Of course having it without ability for NPCs to run away to world map like normal players do is complete nonsense.
It only makes killing them easier.

I have had at least two raiders run from me, stop 20 hexes away and just start telling me that I have won the fight over and over in many different ways e.g., "I'm bad but your the baddest" "this ain't worth dying for" etc.

I'm not sure what triggered it besides their low life or why that never happens for you, but to be honest it's kind of annoying having to chase them down... thats not to say I would change it though.

P.S. I only just started playing again this week, so this happening twice makes it pretty common for me.

Well, this kinda does make sense, but only to a few NPCs, like grenading or rocket launching NPCs, because if they can't kill the enemy far away, why not come close, do more damage, and kill themselves along with the player... you can imagine this...

This happened to me btw... but I eventually kill them before they do! >:)
