You can get there only if you died. So no shells for him. Unless...

That is a whole different quest. He won't react to shells in your inventory (tested

).

They are collectable items: for someone are useless, but for a small group of people who collect all strange and rare items they have some value. I'm also whilling to buy like 2 of them if you want to sell.
