In-Game Information Highway
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:03:34 pm »

Holodisks are a GREAT thing in Fonline2238. But HIGHLY underused. The Lost Children are trying to change that. We have been compiling a holodisk collection of info that could help all wastelanders old and new.

The Pip-Boy's Archive feature is amazing, it is clearly flawed (no delete button) but a very nice way of storing information that you'd want to be able to see whenever you'd like. Also for RP reasons.

My suggestion is aimed towards making holodisk informatin transfer easier.

Suggestion 1: The Offer Button:

Allow someone who has a holodisk in their hand to "offer" the info directly to the player without having to hand them the disk. It's not so much a security thing as it is an EASE of access since holodisks are very cheap. I don't see how this would break anything.

Suggestion 2: The Holodisk Mail Center: (Name could be revised lol)

Have a building at the main towns where you can leave a holodisk with an NPC and tell them who it goes to.  Costs 5-50 caps, and you input the name of player who can pickup the holodisk.

Any suggestions/revisions/agrees/disagrees?

Sounds nice and all but because of out-of-game forms of communications, especially IRC and Forum messaging, these features would still be underused.

Suggestions sound good, no downsides. While other external communication will still be the best, this will still make easier. I would add that holodisks could be bought in more places than Boneyard, as that is currently the only place to buy them, unless I am mistaken.

If nothing else, please at least make people be able to delete Pip-boy entries. That's been suggested many times and it's a great suggestion.

Suggestion 2 would be great. I think it should be applied to all kinds of items not just holodisks.

Love thos suggestion mon!

Agree, however it should have a certain cost, and a chance of failing (example: courier intercepted by raiders/molerats/geckos/trolls)

I agree, and they should be also finded in encounters.

I think the suggestion was misinterpreted.  It's not a MAIL COURIER SYSTEM. It's a man who agrees to HOLD holodisks in town for specific individuals you allocate.

Example:

Holodisk Bob stands in NCR somewhere in some cool building.

Talk to him.

"can you give this holodisk to _____ for me?"

"Sure, that'll be 20 caps!"

Then the person who you wish to pick it up, only has to go check in with Bob.

I fully support this and/or other forms of new communication inside of FO2238.  Heck, since all bases have terminals why not allow people to leave messages for other faction mates in the terminal.  You cick on it, choose leave message for faction member, then click the say button for what you want to say.  Next time said faction member clicks the terminal there's a selection that says "New message available".

+1

In-game, player written, messages/letters/documents would definitely be a win for the immersion of this game. As well as accessible information without having to go to wiki/forum.

OF COURSE, the BEST place for info on ANY game is ON THE INTERNET.

But OF COURSE, in a game like this, learning IN GAME, is much more immersive.

Think it this way: if someone is willing to bring around an holodisk, why someone else shouldnt be willing to carry around a sniper rifle?

If we're getting into technical/realism talk, then the weight of the item is the scapegoat.

Holodisks are small things with a maximum amount of text allowed.

Sniper rifles are bulky, heavy, burdensome weapons that one could not just carry a ridiculous amount of.

It's easy to imagine someone chilling in a town holding messages for someone.

Fallout 2: people were there for hire to hold your car in NCR.... Why couldn't he watch my guns too?

We're talking about messages, not loot.

I didn't mean to sound rude at all, apologies if I did. It's just my thought that, if this idea has any chance of being implemented that the devs understand this is meant to increase in-game information flow without ruining immersion.

Information is a non-game-breaking thing that everyone should have equal access to.

If this went off track and we began discussing easy means of delivering loot to players through the use of an NPC, we easily will see flames discussing the game-breaking mechanics.  A player leaving huge bulks amount of junk/crafting items for their alt? Or even just leaving a weapon for their alt.

----

Overall I'd just like to be clear that the suggestion is meant to increase the amount of information available to players in game, as opposed to having to refer to forums or wiki.
