Improved UI Sprites
« on: August 03, 2011, 04:43:37 am »

Hey, I suppose this is more of a question than a suggestion, but it's about equipment in your inventory. Everyone knows that in fallout, the weapon pictures are all pixelated and rough around the edges, but while I was browsing the 3d development tracker wiki, I noticed that some of the sprites had been ran through photoshop to look nice and smooth around the edges while still looking the same. Here's one of the images after it's been improved:

My question is will we be seeing this in the game later on? Is it possible to put these in to Fallout Online? If so do you want to? It would be nice to see in addition to the 3d models, the sprites in your inventory look a lot smoother than rough around the edges since imo, some of those sprites look really bad because of that problem.

What? The original FO1/2 item pictures (no offense) look much better than the ones created in 3d so far. If you think there are some issues around the edges, then go on and fix it, as it is an easy task.

No offense, but you misunderstood me. I'm saying using the 2d sprites, (I agree the 3d ones look terrible), but "anti-alias" the edges in photoshop like they did on the wiki for some sprites, so they aren't pixelated around the edges. The one in my first post is like that. It's the same sprite just the edges were smoothed out so they didn't look all jagged and weird.

And what is stopping you from removing maybe 100-200 pixels from all the items you find worrysome?
Y'know that everyone can do that and since it's an easy job and you complain about it...

All but the new custom made items are just taken out as they from the games files in the wiki, just for your interest.

It wasn't so much complaining as it was asking about sprite manipulation. It is easy to edit the sprites, actually, and if you could tell me how to change the sprites for myself client-side I would be more than inclined to do it for myself.

Replace "sound/sfx/" with "art/inven/". Use "items" directory if you want to change on-ground images. Files, as always, must have same name as the original one.

I would prefer you to not to talk about things you do not know that way, especially if you have no idea of what level of details the engine requires. This is a severe offense for me personally and other people that spent their time working on that project.

yes graf, ignore them.  Keep working, and at the end show 'em that they're wrong. In the meanwhile you can kick their asses if ya want.

There has been a total misunderstanding here. In agreeing with the moderater, and saying the 3d ones looked bad, I meant as an actual icon, which is, as we are all aware, not what they were intended for. I understand they're supposed to be low polygon and are really small on-screen. I wasn't saying they were terribly done. In fact I honestly feel they were well done, but in reiterating my first post the intention of saying they were terrible was, "They would be terrible if used as UI sprites," which I know they won't be. Sorry for the miscommunication.
