You have to find a map where there is a broken Robobrain, and you do Science on him.
Maybe you need a minimum score in Science

Gave up after failing to find a single metal part after an hour of playing.

It's pretty easy.
Well a bit less easy than 2238 but unlimited and cool.
You have to find a map with a lot of rock on north west, and use the sledgehammer you take when you start.
Zone 19:14 if I remember well (near the tent you see at the beggining) is a good place for example.
