Replacing the Junk Barrel scenery object
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:19:02 am »

I never got why the item used for the junk barrel was one of the most common scenery objects in FOnline.

So, I noticed this little beauty in NCR:

And got wondering why it couldn't be the new junk item - it's rare and unusual enough to stand out. It makes sense that the important gathering items stand out and are instantly recognisable. It's a lot easier to just tell players that beaten up robots yield junk parts and electronics than specific barrels in specific towns do.

Junk barrels do stand out and are instantly recognizable.
They all have grey, white, and blue bottles and such in front of them, just look for this:

Something that stands out doesn't look exactly the same as hundreds of other identical items that appear everywhere with a minor variation stuck in front of it.

Having seen the junk barrel in the NCR, do you honestly think seeing another junk barrel with bottles in front of it is going to scream to the player THIS ONE HAS JUNK IN without being told that bottles are important? It's too subtle. People have (presumably) seen those bottles hundreds of times. They're not going to instinctively make the connection. Hell, until you told me I had no idea.

I'm not saying that half of the players are wandering around having no idea where to get junk. But making an empty barrel with trash bottles, out of all the scenery in FOnline, the source of junk is just a poor design choice. There's dozens of more noticeable and obvious items.

I agree with Badger,  I mean - ok junk can be found anywhere, but junk and electronic parts - broken robots, cars, washing machines, coke vending machines - thats the place where I'd search for them If I was in world like this, and I also agree that when I enter the new city I have to move my cursor over every barrel to see if hand appears or not.

Junk barrels do work fine at the moment but in future it could be cool to have various junk sources since fallout has so many suitable props.
