Encounters are tough; weapons are not.
« on: March 12, 2011, 09:03:21 pm »

Thank you so much for making this an online game, I love the first two Fallouts.

However, I can't really get into this. Each encounter at early an level is certain doom. I'm either stormed by 4-6 raiders with pistols or 14 mutated rats.  Weapons are useless without at least 90% skill in them. So at level 2 maybe I can kill some stuff without darting to the edge of the screen screaming mommy.

I do have a toon that is level 14 with big guns at 200% and after shooting an Avenger Mini-gun 10 times, I realized something that struck me as kind of odd. That is, a real life mini-gun will pulverize a car engine into dust yet the best mini-gun in this game hardly hurts ghouls and armored folks for half their health.

I don't have a fix for you, just this idea. If this game is going to be taken seriously then encounters need to be scaled to the weapons players can use. I'm sure taking 2 hits from a mini-gun would almost garauntee death if not at least being incapacitated in real life. So If my toon is going to get stuck in an encounter he ought to be able with some skill to handle it. No more encounters of 15 Mantis with all my weapons skills below 60%  thats just a waste of time for me the player and your servers.

It is also silly that every encounter starts players within a 20x20 grid in the center of the map regardless of their perception, Fresh meat for the for fully equipped squads of the "remnants" of the master's army to laser, rocket, mini-gun, etc. down with one shot.

I do not think I understand how you came to that conclusion. Anyway, I think the problem is not in the game engine, weapon stats, or whatever, but in your character. I'd say you don't have a good build (please tell us about it).

I am not a Big Guns warrior so I can't be sure, but I think miniguns have been nerfed recently. Still I find it weird that you can't instakill a ghoul with an Avenger, that's why I think you are using a bad build.

Other than that, Wasteland should be harsh and in this online game, lonely heroes should not exist. I like that fact the just gotta run away sometimes.

well the problem man is not in your low level or poor guns, you need right tactic. For example (this is just an example) you can join vault city faction, and walk around vault city, vc caravans and patrol defend you so you enter encounters with them, wait till they kill all bad guys and collect free loot. And that is just short example also you can use operas encounter finder to check what where you might find: http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=4463.0
and be prepared :>

from the responses so far I think you are not reading the entire post. I'm confused how the wasteland is so unforgiving yet someone with 200% in big guns only does about 50-80 base damage with a mini-gun. If the wasteland should be harsh then a mini-gun should tear shit up. Have you ever seen a mini-gun in action? Youtube it, I'm sure you will agree the mini-gun in this game is no where near on par with the realness of the encounter difficulty.

That is exactly my point, the encounters are more realistic than the guns. Its way unbalanced and every encounter is one sided. You are either going to win or lose and its usually obvious before the first shot lands.

What is that to do with how quickly you die to weapons? They are not realistic and they don't pretend to be.

Games
Realism

They don't have to be related.

Think about this, If this game was realistic then I would have the ability to stab someone in the neck and kill them, with any blade regardless. A minigun would tear anything to pieces and a rocketlauncher would demolish everything in it's path. [Which it does]. I think if you did change this all to SUPER realism than it would all be consited on who got the first turn. You could have 100 hp with a minigun, and I have 20 with a switchblade. I'm 1 hex from you with 3 stabs left, I cut your jugular, and slice both of your achillies heels. I win.

Now that doesn't sound fun does it?

I agree that the issue has to be your build, or maybe you're using the wrong kind of ammo, or maybe you're 40 hexes from your target.  You'd kill a ghoul three times over with an avenger with normal 5mm ammo at mid to near range.

Maybe you have finesse? That really destroys your damage.

I almost thought this topic will be about fresh spawned players encountering marauders and stuff, but heck it was not.
I'd personally prefer a little less realism that's currently in.
Fo was always tuned for SP and TB play, with addition of more players and RT, game now play much like RTS games, which means whoever click first wins the day.
It's really shame there's choice only for aimed shots and some weapons with both single and burst, but otherwise half of game is just rolling correct stats, skills and getting gear.
If you got a base with tons of gear and right stats, more than half of game is dead for you. Combat should be more complicated to compensate this fact.
