New Player Perspective / How (Why?) I Play + One Question
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:47:29 pm »

Hey, I figured this could go in the general since it extends a bit outside of the Survival section. Just started playing FOnline the other day (hard to say, feels like somewhere between 12 hours and 4 days, compressed within 2 days, if that makes any sense). I'm nearly level 6 right now, read some advice before char creation, so my main stats are CH, Unarmed, Outdoorsman, etc. The "all around" I guess.

Before I continue, I'll say this: I get PKed a lot (as I'm sure many or most do). Being new to the game, it's off putting, but I also understand that 1) this is a beta, and 2)PKing is an essential facet of the experience. I think that's why I keep at it. But I do think the game has a strong bias towards PKers, versus new players. Call it a learning curve, but I think it's something that atleast merits consideration- I'm sure it is a discussed issue already.

With the northern towns being capitalized by various factions because of the lack of guards, I personally feel like the already difficult nature of the game is exacerbated massively. This is a basic rundown of my "history" and my basic approach after being killed (and why it's such a challenge to start up again and again).

At this point I've done or attempted most of the intro-level quests;
-I was gunned down while carrying the Mordino suitcase (Reno)
-Gunned down after doing the mini quests in NCR for leather jacket and a gun (I think that was the other reward, died so quickly)
-Numerous other cases of mid-quest death

The main reason or "motivation" I even have to keep playing is in the repeatable quests..
Talking to Grisham gives me jerky for fairly easy caps, it also gives an easy way to get a jacket from Balthis after convincing the VC Brahmin merchant to give them stock on loan.
Another boon for my start-up approach is buying cheap brass knuckles in or around Modoc, and having Mook upgrade them to Spiked for free. Not to mention the shit-farming in that town.

So after doing these things enough, a new player can have a basic piece of armor, a basic melee weapon for grinding, and some caps. It's a decent starting point - if it was possible everytime. The constant PKing in Modoc and the northern region make this approach unreliable at best (depending on time of day I guess). I understand the basic nature of the game, and I more or less am alright with it but as far as the learning curve goes, a lot of it seems to rely on luck and time - I think that's a pretty flawed way to introduce new players to any game. That more or less is all I wanted to say, maybe some other newbs will read this and get some ideas on how / what to try for rebuilding after getting PKed.

My question: What, in full, are the requirements for crafting? I've tried to harvest trees into wood with axes (no result), tried using the knife to get fibre from the mutated cornstalks (no luck), cant pick up flint, cant mine / harvest ore or minerals. I have 60 Outdoorsman (but around 20 science and less than that for repair). Is that where my issue is? 3000xp till next level..

Thanks (for the game / experience), it's pretty amazing to play one of my old favorites in a new way.

Hello mr. This game needs guys like you: English speaking and patient fallout fans.

My question: What, in full, are the requirements for crafting? CH like charisma ? so you made a leader like character? that aint gonna be easy play, at least not solo...
you sure you used the right item ? (usables objects are those with hand ...)

finally in manuals the values for geatherables are i belive accurate part junk maybe as you can pick it with realy low skill.
its said there that you need 30% science for flint and 20 outdoorsman for wood (thise one i canconfir mas with 22% i can chop wood)

part that read forums ,stay out of northern cities but hunting around NCR = big chances to find  players ...

Since there's no central location for the various resources' skill requirements on the wiki (although there is in the manual), I'll jot them down for you here.

Outdoorsman:
   20%
  • Wood: equip a hatchet and use on trees in encounters
   40%
  • Fiber: click and hold on orange mutated plants in encounters, dragging the cursor down to the inventory symbol; click on a knife inside the window that pops up
  • Fruit: pick from green mutated plants in encounters

Repair:
   40% (possibly 30%)
  • Junk: interact with scrap barrels {the ones with blue & white bottles, etc. on the ground in front of them} in towns
   80%
  • Electronic Parts: interact with scrap barrels in towns

Science:
   30%
  • Flint: grab off the ground in encounters
   40%
  • Iron: equip a sledgehammer and use on grey rocks in encounters
  • Minerals: equip a sledgehammer and use on brown rocks in encounters

First Aid [or Doctor]:
   60%     [40%]
  • Broc Flowers: pick from small orange flowers in encounters
  • Xander Root: pick from small brown plant in encounters

The values listed are taken from the manual's Production Table and may have changed since its publication.

Try travelling to southern cities - they are much safer. You are less likely to die there... I was wandering at north, had 7 lvl and nothing valuable. When I get to the Junktown, or Hub, i've met one guy, and now we're playing together. Making simple weapons, armors and ammo isn't that hard now, and I don't get killed that often.

thanks a lot guys, especially that nice breakdown of skill requirements. very invaluable (especially right before levelling up). heading to the hub / boneyard now.

shame about the north cause that was a really easy way to get a decent foothold. oh well, new tricks to learn

Thanks for the nice instructions there! I had no idea how to get fibers. (Which i needed to make a jacket untill i luckily came across one in the item shop in NCR.)

Also set a up bank as soon as possible there! much more central location compared to hub and a more diverse types of player converge there.

From my experience, i was never killed in Klamath before, but was killed many times in Reno, so claiming that north/south is dangerous/safe is not very accurate...

Junktown, NCR, VC are the guarded towns, but that doesnt mean that they are safe either XD
(I was killed in VC because i wanted to talk to an inner gate guard, but instead of the "face" curcor, i got a "hand" cursor, reached for the gate, and boomheadshot. This is a notorious bug, some objects are not intercative, unless i scroll an inch away. In NCR i was killed 2 times, once i forgot to put my weapon away, and the next i was working at the workbench with a bunch of people, than all of a sudden the guards went crazy and shot us for...apparently no reason i guess :S)

In klamath i met some people with big guns but they were friendly.. Made fun of me for shoveling shit but it was a nice experience...Unlike Den for example where i get hit by a rocket or minigun half of the time, right after i load the map.. Modoc is the same, few people minding there own business shoveling shit 1 time, then the next i see a group of people in metal armors quadwielding godlike endboss deathrays from hell and im dead before i could say "umm..."
New Reno is the same story...
My rule no. 1: If you see random russian text, its time to exit stage left :D
I've actually used that rule to my advantage before, i switched to russian layout, and shouted some random gibberish. Few players ran away so its fairly effective :D

Where is this "Mook" NPC??

well i do wish i had read this before starting to actually play this game

ive played all the fallout games and i do soo love the first 2 the most so far but when it comes to playing on here all ive managed to do is get pk'ed which quiet frankly was more frustrating than any thing else

the last time i was pk'ed was while talking to someone in gecko i got a rather unseen and nasty combat shotgun to the back and being im lvl 1 with 79 xp died faster than a car can run lol

ive had a scan through the beginner guide and read the bit about shovelling for quickxp and caps then getting a bank account but i have never managed it yet as ive alwasy been pk'ed or the equipment just isn't there to allow yopu to do the job (like a shovel lol) and starting with nothing worth selling or not being given the chnce to sell anything i was left running around trying my luck with chance encounters

and so far every time im got 'lucky' ive then been pk'ed but it is good to know to avoid the the north towns mostly cos of the weak or lack of guards due to the massive pking going on

however are there any actual safe locations with equipment like shovels that reappear so you can at the very start shovel for caps or is it a case of first come first lucky?

Southern Towns are safer - guarded ones. Try Hub/NCR.

Brahmin traders and herdsmen will give you a shovel, just talk to them about jobs, say you'll shovel shit, and then ask for one.
