So it was in an owned hotel room?  And the stuff you guys put in the container for hotel rooms is missing?  Then it is a bug, because no one but the owner of the hotel room can open the door or the container.

Rent another room on same character after letting this rental expire.

Items may reappear, possibly in different containers/on the floor.

I got my stuff back after expiring a room in Klamath, by renting another room- stuff reapeared.

Maybe a similar mechanic at work.

Yes, when you rent another room, you get the content of your last one (stuff in containers at least, not sure for stuff on ground).
