Alts or friends what is the difference?

I honestly don't see the difference between using alts and having friends playing with you. I have friends that pile on resources, fight with me in combat and help me trick opposing gangs into ambushes. There is no difference between doing that with friends or an alt.
Besides the character creation is so crucial to having an effective level 21 character there are going to be times when you would like to progress a character as much as start a new one.
I don't see how alting hurts the game. As long as there isn't a multi boxing program like the one used in World of Warcraft what is the harm? What can an alt do that 10 coordinated friends can't do?
EDIT: I think people will use multiple accounts regardless of your efforts to stop them. At this point in development its just wasting your time, especially since the game is free and you need all the good will you can get for donations and such. Not that you need them.

Clarification: From an bystander PoV an alt just looks like and acts like a friend on voice chat. Just less co-ordinated.

The trick is : With alt, instead of being forced to cooperate with other players, with everyone fullfiling his own role in a team, instead of interactions with the others players... You simply create alts and do it yourself.
It's why dev don't like alts.
