so, I started a character and spawned in modoc but just as soon as i spawned i was set upon by a gang of russian women, is it just me but will the game be much like that everywhere i go, apart from the frequent thievery and mugging by radscorpions? :'(

everyone suffers.     go to NCR find some good people who will help u...    but keep in mind that wastes is a harsh place

yes, i know it was just quite surprising to see 5 russian women with shotguns taking such a fatal interest in me

Yeah, the firsts days are the most harder. Even the walls want to kill you.
Well, dont go to north cities, that is a "warland", people will get you killed just for fun. Try to find some friends or a gang, playing alone is suicide.

started a brand new character and spawned dead in broken hills..
