Radio channel "0"
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:43:17 pm »

Radio is cool as it is now in my opinion. Neverthless there's one thing which i think is very annoying not only for me:

If you loot NPCs who have radios within their inventory its always set on channel "0" by default. Especially if you take the loot from like four critters for example, you have to manually switch each of them off to not be annoyed by the blahblubb of the default radio channel.

So, simple solution would be to just set a random channel to NPC-Radios or (maybe even better) set em on "Off" by default.
I know it's a minor thing here but little improvements also count ;)..

I was thinking about that many times too. But i realized that it wouldn't be good idea. Yeah - that's annoying, truth. But also makes Radio Zero the most popular way to have some loose chat, joking, a little pointless flame war or trading comercials with other players. Random channel or auto-off will make radio zero much less popular.. if not dead.

Note that there is no 'General Chat Room' thing in 2238. Radio Zero plays that role.

I have to disagree Khan. I know what you mean and yes indeed the fact, that NPCs have their channel set to "0" brought some more chatting to this channel. But i remember the time when this wasn't the case and i really see no big difference here. This channel was always crowded as long as there are radios within the game.

Radio is an ingame feature, not an outside IRC channel. I think it would be awesome if NPCs dropped radios set in random frequencies. Why? because it gives you the chance of catching other players' conversation, and spy on them. It would take Radio closer to what it seems to be supposed to be.

I know IRC fucked FOnline radio, but people still use them, even if it is just to meet by distress signal. There would be a chance of getting an unexpected visit when you send a signal to your pal. Of course this wouldn't be happening so often, but the possibility would be there.

Also, I don't know why all NPCs' radios are set on channel 0... maybe they laugh at our trolls.

This is a great idea, to simply have Radios found in random encounter be at Off by default.

Very annoying having to turn them off every time you just want to store them without having white blocks of text on the ground.

I actually like it turned on when you loot them...

Always brightens up your day when you pick up a radio and have someone screaming "DILDOS DILDOS DILDOS!!!" on the other side.   ;)

The radio could have been a good idea with 0 as the default channel if there wouldn't be so much children and idiocy around. (Post above me has a good example in it)

This would really kill channel 0. While you spend most of time crawling in abandoned mines crafting in your base or waiting on wm, radios on channel 0 lying in your base is single thing which remids you that wasteland is allive and that there are other players around somewhere there.

Nothing good comes out of channel zero anyway. Then again we can blame ourselves from excessive encounter farming and hoarding items.

Totally agree. And I store all unused radios in 1 pile at the base. So if someone of my mates forgot to turn damn thing off before dropping, it floods until I find that damn radio.
A very good suggestion.

Off or random channel both would work just perfect. +1

I've implemented this suggestion, will be available in the next update.

Receive is always turned off when buying or looting a new radio and channel is set to a randomized value between 0-10.
