How about laser smg/plasma smg- like the pistol but an SMG?
Same range and ammo type.
It would be better than the pistol in the same way SMG is better than 10mm pistol.
This would make EW more fun. Laser rifles are boring.
Just give it a ton of deterioration, and crit failures are plasma grenade explosions.

EDIT: laser smg would be as useful as gattling laser, enjoy wasting yer mfcs
I'd rather like to see upgraded laser rifle doing something ( extra ammo capacity there is nearly useless )

The hidden point was that as a glorified pistol it would use pistol ammo.
SEC, not MFC.
Also the whole idea was kind of a joke.
